Strong primary turnout follows statewide vote
About 30 percent of Berlin’s affiliated voters came out to vote in the Aug. 10 primary; almost twice the turnout of voters statewide, according to the registrars of voters office.
Aug. 13 DUI checkpoint
A DUI sobriety checkpoint will be conducted on the evening of Friday, Aug. 13. The checkpoint will be set up on the Berlin Turnpike in the area of Middletown Road.
Berlin's population tops 20,000
Berlin has broken the 20,000 mark in population according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Town Manager Denise McNair reports that Berlin had “high compliance” in terms of returning census forms.

9/11 memorial for Berlin gets underway
Berlin fire fighters planned to travel to New York City early Tuesday morning to collect steel from the World Trade Towers. The materials will be used to create a 9\11 memorial for Berlin in a small park now under design in front of the Kensington Fire Rescue facility on Farmington Avenue.

Diabetes self-care class forming
The Central Connecticut Health District, serving the towns of Berlin, Newington, Rocky Hill, and Wethersfield, is pleased to offer a diabetes self-care course to residents of the health district. Funded by a grant from the Connecticut Department of Public Health, the course will run for six consecutive weeks. The course is free of charge.
All polls will be open Aug. 10
Voters who are registered as Democrat or Republican can participate in the Aug. 10 primary, a state and federal elections primary. All five polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.: Willard Elementary School, American Legion, Hubbard Elementary School, Berlin Senior Center and Griswold Elementary School.
DUI enforcement
The Berlin Police Department will conduct a DUI sobriety checkpoint during the evening of Friday into Saturday Aug. 6 to Aug. 7. The checkpoint will be set up on the Berlin Turnpike in the area of Middletown Road.
