(George Millerd, Republican Town Committee Chairman, released the following statement following Tuesday’s defeat of the $83,000,000 Berlin High School renovation proposal.)
"The Berlin Republican Town Committee commends all our citizens who voted in yesterday's referendum. The high turnout is a testament that the community does pay attention and an individual’s vote does matter. A special thank you to John Killian who obtained a majority of the signatures that allowed the issue to be decided by the voters under the referendum provision in our Town Charter that was implemented by former Mayor Paul Argazzi and the Republican Town Council in 2002,” said Millerd.
“The townspeople must now unite behind Option #1, the $25 million plan that would resolve all the accreditation issues at Berlin High School. We paid the architects a substantial sum to develop two plans, one of which, Option 2, has now been rejected. In order to avoid any additional referendum costs and any further divisiveness and bitterness, the Town Council should adopt this plan as the basis of a going forward solution and fix Berlin High School as soon as possible. Our membership supports this option and will enthusiastically support its implementation,” said Millerd.
Millerd concluded, “The town has many needs. A balanced approach must be taken with regard to large scale expenditures and we must ensure that our tax dollars are spent wisely to ensure this renovation project is completed in a workmanlike and expeditious manner so that there is as little disruption as possible to the high school student population.”
