At its meeting Tuesday night, the Town Council will consider and possibly take action on a plan to upgrade Berlin High School for code and accessibility violations.

The council will consider two plans which are meant to fix issues with the facility in regard to The Americans with Disabilities Act and also numerous code violations.
The first option calls for an addition of 20,000 square feet on the southeast corner of the technical education wing along with other renovations. The cost would be about $22.2 million. The addition would be over the technical education wing and the footprint of the building would not change. The other renovations would be in the areas used for math, special education, English, guidance and the boys’ locker room showers. ADA and air quality issues would be addressed.
A net reimbursement of 15 percent from the state would be available, les than for new construction or for an extensive renovation such as described in option two.
In option two, there would be an extensive renovation to the entire school facility. The specifics of this option need to be developed further according to a memo to the council from Public Works Director Arthur Simonian.
With this option, the facility would be fully renovated with a 50,000 square foot addition and significant additions to on-site athletic facilities. The cost would be about $83 million with the town’s portion about $58.5 million with a projected reimbursement rate of 30 percent.
