As part of a “comprehensive turnaround strategy”, A&P management announced last week that it will close 25 stores in five states.
The local Super Foodmart store at Webster Square Road is among those expected to close its doors this fall.
The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. made the announcement Aug. 13. The affected stores include locations in close proximity to other company stores, those facing real estate and cost issues, and underperforming non-core stores. The store closures are expected to be completed in the company's fiscal third quarter.
The store manager declined to comment on the closing.
A&P President and Chief Executive Officer Sam Martin said, "As part of our turnaround, we have initiated a detailed review of our store footprint and have decided to close these 25 locations. While this was a very difficult decision that will unfortunately impact some of our customers, partners, communities and employees, these actions are absolutely necessary to strengthen A&P's operating foundation and improve our performance going forward. We will help our affected colleagues pursue other positions across the Company should open positions be available."
“It’s never a good day when any business closes and I hate to see them close their doors, they’ve been in the community a long time. It’s another victim of a down economy,” said Katherine A. Fuechsel, executive director of the Berlin Chamber of Commerce.
Last month, the company appointed a new CEO, former Office Max executive Sam Martin. He replaces Ron Marshall, who took over as A&P's CEO in January. For the quarter that ended June 19, A&P reported a loss of $122.6 million, compared with a loss of $65.2 million the previous year.
